Jess C.

Colorado Springs, CO
RN; Mental Health Clinic

“Nursing is so much more than I ever though it would be. I am challenged every day to lead people, to make decisions that impact patients and their families, and to be a better person as well as a better nurse each day. While RN’s can specialize in anything, I opted for psychiatric nursing because I’m a ‘people-person’. I love the fact that psychiatry is not a cut and dried field – nothing is black and white when dealing with the human mind. The best part of my job is when I get to make a positive impact on a person and help them get their life back on track. Although nursing is still a predominantly female career field, I believe that the numbers will even out over the next ten or twelve years. More men are entering the profession every day, and the Army’s nurse corps is already 37 percent male. And as a military nurse I’ve been given the chance to travel the world. I’ve been stationed at numerous posts in America as well as in Korea. I’m very confident that my nursing degree will guarantee me a job wherever I decide to go and in whatever setting I choose.” Captain Calohan is the recipient of the 2001 Chief of the Nurse Corps Leadership Excellence Award. This honor is bestowed annually on the most outstanding junior officer in the United States Army Nurse Corps.
