Janice M.

Trenton, NJ
Doctoral Candidate

I began my nursing career working in Boston at a large teaching hospital where I attended nursing school. I enjoyed working in a variety of settings within that hospital, “floating” to medical, surgical, kidney transplant, orthopedic, and cardiac care units. This experience gave me the diversity of experience I was seeking. Ultimately, I found occupational health to be my “niche,” and decided to focus and build my career on that specialty. Occupational health nursing is grounded in the principles of public health, focusing on prevention, health teaching, health promotion, and control and elimination of workplace health hazards. I have practiced occupational health nursing for 15 years, and have had the opportunity to work in many exciting settings. I have worked for a city government with 1,700 employees, for a pharmaceutical company with 300 employees, and, most recently, for a Johnson & Johnson operating company with 2400 employees. During my career, I obtained Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Business, with a Health Services specialty, and I am currently a Doctoral candidate. This education has allowed me to expand my career choices in management, but within occupational health. Occupational health nursing has given me the opportunity to work both autonomously and with other health care and business professionals. It offers professional growth and an abundance of opportunities in a variety of nursing specialties including case management, wellness, teaching, and management. It is a wonderful and fulfilling career choice.
