Greg M.

York, PA
RN, Trauma Center

It was an interesting course of events that led me to the nursing profession. I was employed for about 20 years as a paramedic, always delivering patients to the nurses in the emergency department at the local hospital. I enjoyed watching them work; they were knowledgeable, competent, and performed skills beyond my scope of practice as a paramedic. I thought it was valuable and important work, and I decided to go back to school for my nursing degree. I haven’t looked back since.

Over the years, I have worked in several areas, but have settled into emergency medicine. My experience as a paramedic made working in the Emergency Department a natural fit, and I have loved every second of it. I enjoy the autonomy that I have, the excitement of a busy shift, the variety of patients who come through the door, and the opportunity to follow a career that makes a valuable contribution to the community. However, the thing I enjoy most about being a nurse is when I am at the bedside and asking the patient, “What can I do to help you?”

Another great thing about nursing is the ability to pursue other interests. I love music and have played piano since I was 5. After many years and much practice, I have grown to be proficient at it and now compose and perform my own original compositions. I keep the two careers running a parallel course by performing at nursing functions such as seminars, conferences, and at weddings and other events for the staff and their relatives.

It has been a wonderful journey and I have no regrets about becoming a nurse.
