From an early age, I have been interested in helping others in a health care role. I considered studying to become a physician, but after working as an Emergency Medical Technician and watching how various health care professionals interacted and worked with patients, I decided nursing was the preferred path for me to follow. I began as an EMT and worked my way through becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse, an Associate Degree Registered Nurse, a Baccalaureate prepared Registered Nurse, a Master's prepared Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and finally to a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Throughout my 30+ years in nursing, I have worked as an Army Officer, and as a civilian, in Emergency, Critical Care, and Anesthesia Nursing. Today, in addition to continuing to provide clinical anesthesia services, I am the President of a national medical legal consulting firm, I own a specialty health and fitness training organization, and I am involved in the Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response Education and Training of nursing leaders. And, therein lies the greatest appeal nursing has for me: In what other profession could I do so much to help others, while simultaneously contributing to the health care, fitness, education, homeland security, and legal disciplines?
